Math Academy

Due Monday, October 15th

My grandmother, Carla, is a really good seamstress. Next week, Carla plans on making a skirt, vest and a jacket.  Currently, she has 4 and 3/4 yards of material.  If the skirt requires: 1 and ¾ yards of material, the jacket requires 2 and 7/16 yards, and the vest requires 5/8 yards -  1) Does Carla have enough material?  2)  How do you know this? Be sure to use your initials and clearly label your comment.

1)No, she does not have enough to make all the items she desires.
2)Because when you add the fractions of material each item requires you come to the answer 4 and 13/16. She only has 4 and 3/4 yards of material. she would need 3/8 yards more of material in order to make the skirt, vest, and jacket. The way i found that was subtract 4 and 3/4 from 4 and 13/16 and the answer is negative 3/8.

  2. 1. No, Carla does not have enough material.
    2. I know Carla does not have enough material because I added together the lengths of material required for the skirt, jacket and vest and got a sum of 5. If Carla only has 4 and 3/4 yards of material, she will not have enough.

  3. 1) No
    2) Because she doesn't have enough material to to make all those things. She only has 4.75 yards and she needs 4.81 yards. I got my answer by turning all the fractions into decimals. L.W.

  4. 1) No.

    2)
    4 3/4 = 4 12/16
    1 3/4 = 1 12/16
    2 7/16 = 2 7/16
    5/8 = 10/16

    12/16 + 2 7/16 + 10/16 = 4 13/16

    She is 1/16 off

  5. Carla does have enough material. I took the amount of material that she started with which was 4 and 3/4 and then subtracted the amount that she used for skirt which was 1 and 3/4. Then took that answer which was 3 and 3/4. So I took 3 and 3/4 and subtracted 2 and 7/16 which is what she used for the jacket. That answer is 1 and 5/16. So I took that answer 1 and 5/16 and subtracted 5/8 which is how much she used for the vest. And the answer is 11/16. So she has 11/16 left over.

  6. Carla doesn't have enough material to make the items she desires. the amount of material Carla already has is 4 3/4. how i got this was i subtract the 1 3/4 from the 4 3/4 which was 1 and 3/4. then i took 1 3/4 and subtracted 2 7/16 and i got 1 and 5/16 and subtracted 5/8 which is how much was used for the vest. the answer i got was 11/16.

  7. 1) No she does not have enough material.
    2) If you find the LCD of all the amounts, to start with she has 4 12/16.
You then add all the amounts it takes for each piece; Skirt-1 12/16 Jacket-2 7/16 Vest-10/16
    1 12/16+2 7/16+10/16= 4 13/16

She is 1/16 short of material.

  8. 1. NO

2 carla has a total of 4 3/4 material to make a skirt, vest, and jacket. the skirt requires 1 3/4 material, the jacket 2 7/16 material and the vest requires 5/8 of the material. First i found the LCD of all the fractions, 4 3/4=4 12/16, 1 3/4=1 12/16, 5/8=10/16, and 2 7/16=2 7/16. Then i added all these up and got 4 13/16, so no she does not have enough material. To figure out how much she was short by you subtract 4 3/4 from 4 13/16 leaving you with 1/6. she was 1/6 short of material.
